Polar Ice Caps
Polar Ice Caps
If the temperature gets warm enough the ice caps will melt. Many areas around the world have become much warmer and scientist believe it could be caused by many things such as burning gasoline to drive cars, coal to make electricity, or using oil and natural gas to hear homes or forests to make room for growing crops. Once the gassed are created, they end up trapping more of the sun's heat. This ends up melting the ice caps therefore increasing the ocean levels.
I chose this article because ice caps have always been something I've been extremely interested in. They are a major source of fresh water since almost 2% is locked in ice caps and glaciers. If they melt into the ocean it would completely destroy our fresh water and turn it into salt. They are also home to my favorite animal, the polar bear. Without any ice to walk upon they could have less living space or they could drown.
To try to slow down the melting of the ice caps there is something very simple we can all do. We can stop driving cars as often as we do. This would decrease the levels of gases going up to the air and the ocean. We should also try rouse much more efficient energy sources such as solar and wind energy. These changes would definitely slow down the process of melting ice caps and would therefore save the polar bears and other animals living in the North & South poles.
